MAC, one of the world’s leading makeup brands and I have now only just given it a look! I know, I know; I am extremely late to this brand band waggon but hear me out! I have a very set makeup routine, using the same products in the same colour pallet. Yes boring, but as the summer is very much upon us (*she writes as it is raining) I have decided to ‘spice it up’ and go for louder lip colours. It is stepping out of my very secure makeup comfort zone, but it is not the end of the world if I don’t continue the re-vamp as lip colours don’t take up much room in the collection and I’m sure I will use them again and again.
A while back I was digging around in my purse and found that I still had a Selfridges voucher, which I was kindly given by one of my flatmates at Christmas. So I thought as I was giving the old makeup look a re-vamp, I would treat myself to a high-end lippy!
*For non-UK readers, Selfridges is like our Barneys or Sephora.
Walking into Selfridges is like walking into Buckingham Palace of makeup (if it was a thing). My goodness, it is so well lit and clean, also this was quite a while back when I was venturing up north (post about this can be found here) and I had my yellow suitcase: I was twinning with Selfridges! It is definitely not where I typically shop, I’m usually in Superdrug testing all the lip colours out in front of a tiny smudge mirror. But no, not in Selfridges; all the mirrors are crystal clean and there is more than one!
Navigated myself to the lip products and I was lost.
Cream sheen, lustre, matte and retro-matte, Viva-Glam, etc – all these different finishes. Which is great if you actually know the difference from one to another, but unfortunately I just know that some lip products are glossy and some are matte – that is the extent. So I just started testing them on my hand, initially going up to the counter hoping to buy a red matte lipstick which had taken my fancy (Spice It Up! I believe).
However, I ended up with All Fired Up – this beautiful fuschia pink with a reddish undertone, not at all what I thought would look good on me and definitely not what I would’ve gone for on my own! Thanks to a lovely MAC sales assistant who was kind enough to take her time testing loads of different shades out on me. This is a retro-matte lipstick but it doesn’t feel drying on the lips or flaky like some of my cheap matte’s do! I can see why people spend a little more on makeup products because the service you get is great and for someone who was stepping out of their comfort zone, I really appreciated the help.
Sidenote: I tried on ‘Stone’ which I loved as it was very different, so if I decide to build a collection of these extremely pricey lip products, is going to be my next purchase!
I am so excited to have this gorgeous shade as it is something new for summer and I love a bit of colour here and there for the makeup. The feel of the lipstick is luxurious (even the click of the lid is satisfying…) and the product itself has a beautiful finish – not drying on my lips at all and of course, extremely pigmented. To be honest, I am shocked that I went for this shade, it’s very ‘Barbie’ which is not my style at all, but that’s what the shock of having a mirror to yourself when makeup shopping does to you!
So there is, how I lost my ‘MAC virginity’ – at last! There is something almost empowering about how a new boldly coloured lipstick can make you feel, making one radiate with confidence from putting on one product! As Audrey Hepburn said, ‘on a bad day there is always lipstick’ which I think is so true, though I’m not at all bias when it comes to Ms Hepburn am I…
